So what is SILDENAFIL for?

Well, I am sure that most people know the answer to that. It’s for Erectile Dysfunction.

And the good news is that it is now available off prescription. However, we have prescribing pharmacists at Udani Chemist, and so it will work out cheaper getting it prescribed at our Pharmacy.

However, that is not what this blog is about.

It’s about all the other new areas that they are looking at using SILDENAFIL. I should say the group of drugs that  SILDENAFIL belongs to. That is the Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE-5).

Cancer

PDE-5 Inhibitor drugs have the ability to help other established anti-cancer drugs get into the parts of the body that are affected by cancer such as the brain or to increase the potency of anti-cancer drugs that are used to fight against breast cancer. This anti-cancer effect may be linked to the fact that PDE-5 Inhibitors increase the levels of nitric oxide and free radicals which help to kill the cancer cells.

Heart Disease

There is also evidence suggesting that PDE-5 Inhibitors have a protective effect on the heart. This may be due to their ability to dilate blood vessels and to reduce the pressure on the heart. Even newer reports say that they have an effect on the actual cells of the heart.

However, the jury is still out on their ability to protect the heart. Hopefully, more research in this area will help us decide the verdict.

Dementia

The PDE-5 Inhibitors can get into the brain and reduce inflammation. They have been found to reduce amyloid plaques in mice. These amyloid plaques are a big factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. There is also research looking at the effects of these drugs on Vascular Dementia.

Other Areas of Research

These include Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Viral Activity.

Diabetic related Macular Degeneration.

Male Urogenital Disease.

Cystic Fibrosis.

So there is a lot going on.

Hopefully, it will lead to some life-saving treatments.
